The ends of the bands pass over the joints of the case and are attached to the sides with ornamental lacing. Centrally-placed straps may also be extended into a strap and buckle fastening associated with a fore-edge envelope flap. Leather bands are typically found on tacketed stationery bindings, but are very occasionally found on printed books. In eighteenth- and nineteenth-century British stationery bindings, the bands were often made of russia calf and the bands were consequently known as 'russia bands'. Lacing of a variety of colours and materials, most often white (from parchment or alum-tawed thongs), as well as coloured textile ribbons, was used to secure the ends of the bands to the cover, with the intention of creating a decorative effect by contrasting the colour of the lacing with that of the case, in addition to the intricacy of the ornamental lacing patterns.","type":"string"},"datatype":"string"},"type":"statement","id":"Q1059$47CAE767-23AF-4E00-AE8E-F692E873E431","rank":"normal"}],"P426":[{"mainsnak":{"snaktype":"value","property":"P426","hash":"9e1333355bcff875e31344ea0d0deb81f898f88e","datavalue":{"value":{"entity-type":"item","numeric-id":196,"id":"Q196"},"type":"wikibase-entityid"},"datatype":"wikibase-item"},"type":"statement","id":"Q1059$52C7BA1A-4B3C-440C-9087-5D97D6DB935B","rank":"normal"}],"P440":[{"mainsnak":{"snaktype":"value","property":"P440","hash":"56e2c5e0cef63db21326471854f8ef059c1db688","datavalue":{"value":{"entity-type":"item","numeric-id":1053,"id":"Q1053"},"type":"wikibase-entityid"},"datatype":"wikibase-item"},"type":"statement","id":"Q1059$60AA393E-AB86-462D-8113-E6D179E308FB","rank":"normal"}],"P441":[{"mainsnak":{"snaktype":"value","property":"P441","hash":"c7d872e9af853c6bbd4428cd543f181492cc11e4","datavalue":{"value":{"entity-type":"item","numeric-id":1399,"id":"Q1399"},"type":"wikibase-entityid"},"datatype":"wikibase-item"},"type":"statement","id":"Q1059$7EBB243E-A802-4653-A329-051AFEAB1DCF","rank":"normal"}]},"sitelinks":{}}}}
