In 1311 Ismail attacked Bazas, in Granada, with machines \u201cthrowing balls of fire, with a noise like thunder.\u201d In the archives of the town of Ghent it is stated that in 1313 the town was possessed of a small cannon; and in the records of the Florentine Republic it is stated that in 1325 two officers were ordered to manufacture cannon and iron bullets for the defence of the castles and villages belonging to the republic.
