spine labels (Q1418)

A small piece of sheet material most often of tanned skin, but also of either paper or parchment, adhered to the spine of a bound book, usually bearing the title, volume number and sometimes date and place of printing, or any other information that an owner might wish to see on the spine of a book. They may be titled in manuscript, printed or tooled.
