    Statements

The flint-lock was called after them the Snaphaunce, under which name it certainly was known for many years in the Netherlands. Soon after their introduction the flint-lock guns were called fusils, from the flints (jucile), by a very common abuse of language, which consists in giving to an entire object a name taken from one of its parts. The flint-lock is so well known that it is almost unnecessary to describe its mechanism.
