    Statements

    The group of shooters is from a picture by M. Ferelen, and is dated 1533; the shooter kneeling is from a wood-cut of 1545. It was usual to shoot with both eyes open at this date, but from a drawing of 1500-10 in the Munich State Library the habit of closing one eye was also practised; this drawing is here reproduced (page 63), and shows the intention of the shooter unmistakably.
