The edges of an assembled bookblock which have been cut overall to produce a smooth edge. Such edges may be cut by either a draw-knife or a plough and would be suitable then for colouring, gilding, polishing, etc. Cutting the edges of a book makes the leaves easier to turn and keep clean, and until the beginning of the 19th century, were generally preferred to uncut edges.
